United Nations General Secretary Kofi Annan and Greek Cypriot leader Tasos Papadopoulus will sit down together in Paris today for talks for the first time since the Greek Cypriots voted by referendum to reject the Annan plan for peace on the island. Annan is expected to put Ankara's new plan for a Cypriot solution on the table today, and it is likewise expected that Papadopoulus will respond with a demand for Maras, a long-standing contention of the Greek side.

The importance of today's meeting in Paris derives from the fact that Ankara is bound to open its air and sea ports to Greek Cypriot airplanes and ships by the end of this year. If no solution is found to the Cypriot problems, serious troubles between Turkey and the EU are expected to emerge.
Positive outcome to meeting not anticipated
Diplomatic sources say that a positive outcome from the Annan-Papadopoulus meeting today is not expected. Many say that Papadopoulus' main agenda in his meetings with Annan is to rescue Greek Cyprus from the international image of "not wanting a solution," in the light of upcoming Greek Cypriot parliamentary elections in late May.
