As Ankara prepares to host Iraqi President Ibrahim Jaferi today, the Ministers' Council yesterday discussed the latest events in Iraq, with Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul briefing top level government ministers on recent developments in both Iraq and Iran. According to official sources, Gul relayed concerns that violence between Shiites and Sunnis in neighboring Iraq was fast dragging the country into a civil war.

Gul also stressed that Turkey was determined to play a role in preventing this from happening, and that to that end, the visit by Jaferi today would be followed in short time by a visit to Ankara by Shiite leader Muqaada Al Sadr.
    Meetings with Erdogan and Gul

President Jaferi is expected to meet with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul in Ankara. The main focus of the meetings will be discussions on how to prevent further sectarian violence from tearing apart Iraq.
