The first ever civilian General Secretary of Turkey's National Security Council (MGK), Yigit Alpogan, has said that Turkey's official recognition of Greek run Cyprus could occur only with a general solution of the Cyprus problem.

Speaking to the Greek newspaper Elefteros Tipos, Alpogan answered the question "What would Ankara's reaction be if a ship registered to Cyprus docked at a Turkish port?" by saying: "Turkey believes that all restrictions on everything including ports and airplanes will be lifted in good time."
Responding to this question: "In Athens there is the belief that the Turkish government faces pressure from the Turkish armed forces on many foreign policy issues. Is this true?" Alpogan said: "The fact that Turkey is a country marching directly for the EU shows that this question is devoid of meaning."
Addressing the question of whether there would be a repeat to recent tension on the Turkish Aegean coastline which occured during a visit by Greek Foreign Minister Petros Moliviyatis to Ankara, Alpogan said "This depends on the behavior of some of the Greek fishermen. The cause of the tension during Moliviyatis' visit to Ankara was the Greek fishermen."
