An official from the Agriculture Ministry, Nihat Pakdil, has said that since October 5 there have been no new cases of the deadly bird flu seen in Turkey, and that there was no reason for people to worry further.

Speaking at a special conference on bird flu in poultry animals, Pakdil said: "The disease has been contained in the quarantine area. The destruction of sick animals has been completed. There is no need to worry. Not only Manyas, but all of Turkey, with a focus on wetlands, is under observation and control. We have sent samples from Manyas to the International Referance Laboratories in England."  Noting that the period of quarantine was for 21 days, Pakdil said it included stray dogs and cats, which, he said, were considered a risk as they could possibility eat infected bird meat.
