Mehmet Ali Ağca, the Assassin of prominent Turkish journalist Abdi Ipekçi, has had his sentence reduced by up to 14 years under the new Turkish penal code. Ağca’s two cases of "wrongful seizure" for which he was sentenced to 36-years, have been re-assessed according to the new Turkish Penal Code. The court sentenced Ağca to 21 years and 8 months imprisonment after a re-evaluation of the case according to laws that are, so it seems, in his favor, under the New Turkish Penal Code.

    I am innocent

When asked to speak in his defence at Kadıköy 1st Criminal Court, Ağca repeated his argument: “I do not accept the allegations put against me. I have been suffering in prison for 26 years; there is nothing else to add. I have been made to suffer the terror caused by the media”, he said.

Public Prosecutor Doğan Kaptan stated that the case had to be heard once again, this time considering articles of the New Turkish Penal Code which have brought new rulings in favour of the accused. Kaptan explained that the defendent’s sentence was reduced from capital punishment to life imprisonment for the murder of journalist Abdi Ipekçi.
