Making the inauguration address of the conference as the host, academician Francis Fukuyama said that a society's being religious does not conflict with democracy and secularism and ; U.S. is one of the most religious societies in the West but this does not prevent the administration from being laic and democratic.
Fukuyama said that the AKP ruling in Turkey has shown that being both Moslem and democratic was possible and Turkey could be a model to the Islam world with these characteristics.
