Greek Foreign Minister Petros Molivyatis has said that, like all other EU candidate countries which have fulfilled the requirements for EU membership, Turkey should be allowed to become an EU member. In a message to Ankara, FM Molivyatis recalled that "when Greece was a candidate country, there was opposition across Europe to us."

Molivyatis also talked about the Greek role in possible Turkish accession talks, saying "Greece will be a fair but strict jury member in accession talks with Turkey." Molivyatis also added that he thought that EU declarations and framework documents would affect Turkish policies towards Greece, noting that Athens and the Greek Cypriot authority would be studying these documents closely.
