Greek Cypriot woman Titina lozidiu won compensation of nearly 1 million dollars in 1998 from Turkey on grounds that she had not been allowed to visit her home in Northern Cyprus since 1974. Turkey had been warned three times by the European Council for refusing to pay the compensation, claiming it was political. At the end of 2003 Turkey paid compensation nearing 2 million dollars to the woman.

If the ECHR rules in favor of another Greek Cypriot, Mira Aristis, also claiming for compensation on the same grounds, Turkey will be facing a pay out of 25 billion dollars. The importance of the Aristis case will be that the ECHR will also decide on whether the Compensation Commission in TRNC was authorized to deal with these issues.

The number of Greek Cypriots suing Ankara after they turned down the peace plan of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in April, has increased rapidly.
