1 out of every 4 Turks living on edge of poverty

Research carried out by the Turkish Statistics Bureau (TUIK) shows that while the number of Turks living under the line of extreme poverty-hunger rose in 2004 to 909 thousand, the figures for those living under the normal poverty level dropped to 17,991,000. The TUIK study also determined that out of every 100 people in Turkey, 1.29 are living in hunger and extreme poverty, while 25.6 are in poverty. The same study showed that hunger and poverty numbers are on the rise in rural areas of the country, while cities and towns show a tendency towards better conditions.
